Estimate for a resident individual with salary and other income at slab rates, under the Income-tax Act, 1961 as amended by the Finance Act, 2025. It does not cover capital gains, business income, let-out property, 80G/80TTA, TDS or advance-tax credits. The calculator runs in your browser and sends nothing anywhere. The AI chat, if shown below it, is a separate feature that does send your question to a server. This is educational, not professional advice: check with a chartered accountant before filing.

Ask the AI tax assistant
Your question is sent to SMNIFY's AI server, which searches excerpts of the Income-tax Act, 2025 and asks an AI model to write the answer. That Act applies from 1 April 2026; the calculator above uses the Income-tax Act, 1961 for FY 2025-26, so the two can differ. Educational, not professional advice.
How to use the Income Tax Calculator FY 2025-26
- Choose your Age on 31 March 2026: below 60, 60 to 79, or 80 and above. Age changes only the old-regime slabs and the 80D limit.
- Enter Annual gross salary and any Other income taxed at slab rates, in rupees.
- Optionally open the salary breakup and add Basic + DA, HRA received, Rent paid, the metro-city tick, and Employer NPS 80CCD(2).
- Optionally open the old-regime deductions and add 80C, NPS self 80CCD(1B), 80D premiums, 80E education-loan interest and 24(b) home-loan interest.
- Read the verdict at the top, the two regime cards and the Step by step table, then press Download comparison to save the figures with the official sources.
Worked example
Sample data
Age: below 60 Annual gross salary: 15,00,000 Basic + DA: 6,00,000 HRA received: 2,40,000 Rent paid: 3,00,000 (metro city) 80C: 1,50,000 80D self and family: 25,000
New regime: taxable income 14,25,000, tax on slabs 93,750, cess 3,750, total tax 97,500 Old regime: deductions 4,15,000 (HRA 2,40,000 + 80C 1,50,000 + 80D 25,000), taxable income 10,35,000, tax on slabs 1,23,000, cess 4,920, total tax 1,27,920 Verdict: the new regime is cheaper by 30,420 a year.
Figures come from this calculator's own code, rounded to the nearest rupee as shown. New regime: salary less the 75,000 standard deduction. Old regime: 50,000 standard deduction applied before the deductions listed. No 87A rebate applies at these incomes and no surcharge, because taxable income is below 50 lakh.
How it works
Which law and which year
The calculator is for the financial year 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2026 (FY 2025-26), reported in the assessment year 2026-27, and uses the Income-tax Act, 1961 as amended by the Finance Act, 2025. India's new Income-tax Act, 2025 replaces the 1961 Act from 1 April 2026, so FY 2025-26 income is still assessed under the 1961 Act.
It covers resident individuals only, and only for salary and other income taxed at slab rates. It is not a calculator for other countries or other years.
New versus old regime
The new regime is the default under section 115BAC. Slabs: nil up to 4 lakh, 5% to 8 lakh, 10% to 12 lakh, 15% to 16 lakh, 20% to 20 lakh, 25% to 24 lakh, 30% above. Salary gets a 75,000 standard deduction. Most deductions (80C, 80D, HRA, home-loan interest) are not allowed, but employer NPS under 80CCD(2) is.
The old regime keeps the older slabs (nil up to 2.5 lakh, 5% to 5 lakh, 20% to 10 lakh, 30% above, with higher nil thresholds at ages 60 and 80), a 50,000 standard deduction and the deductions listed in the form. Which regime costs less depends on how much you can actually claim.
Rebate, surcharge and cess
Section 87A rebate: under the new regime tax is nil up to 12 lakh of taxable income, with marginal relief just above it so tax never exceeds the income above 12 lakh. Under the old regime the rebate is up to 12,500 when income is up to 5 lakh.
Surcharge applies above 50 lakh (10%), 1 crore (15%), 2 crore (25%) and 5 crore (37%, old regime only; the new regime is capped at 25%), with marginal relief. A 4% health and education cess is added on tax plus surcharge. Taxable income and final tax are rounded to the nearest 10 rupees.
total tax = (slab tax - rebate - marginal relief + surcharge) x 1.04, rounded to the nearest 10 rupees
How the AI chat answers (when it is shown)
The chat appears only when an AI server is connected to this deployment. Your question is sent to SMNIFY's AI server, which converts it to a vector, retrieves matching excerpts of the Income-tax Act, 2025 from a database, and asks a language model to write an answer from them. If no excerpts match, the server's prompt lets the model fall back on general tax knowledge, so an answer can come from the model rather than the Act.
That chat is grounded in the Income-tax Act, 2025, which applies from 1 April 2026, while the calculator uses the 1961 Act for FY 2025-26. The two can differ, so do not use the chat to check the calculator's FY 2025-26 figures. Answers can be wrong, and any page references point into the Act's PDF on this site.

Frequently asked questions
Which country and tax year does this cover?
India only: resident individuals for FY 2025-26, assessment year 2026-27, under the Income-tax Act, 1961 as amended by the Finance Act, 2025. It is not a global tax tool, and other countries or years are not supported.
Is this tax advice?
No. It is an educational estimate. Your actual liability depends on details this tool does not model, so confirm with a chartered accountant or the Income Tax Department before filing.
Does the calculator send my income anywhere?
No. The figures you type stay in your browser, and analytics events record only that a comparison was made. The optional AI chat is separate and does send your question to a server.
Where do the AI chat's answers come from?
From retrieval plus a language model: excerpts of the Income-tax Act, 2025 are looked up for your question and a model writes the answer. If nothing matches, the model may answer from general knowledge. It can be wrong, and it follows the 2025 Act, not the 1961 Act used for FY 2025-26.
Why might the chat and the calculator disagree?
They use different laws. The calculator applies the 1961 Act as amended for FY 2025-26; the chat is built on the Income-tax Act, 2025, which applies from 1 April 2026 and renumbers many sections.
Has a person checked these rules against the law?
Not yet. The page shows an unreviewed notice until a qualified person records a review date. Until then, compare the numbers with the official sources linked on this page.
